Bioforcetech to Present at American Concrete Institute Annual Conference
Bioforcetech (BFT) is proud to announce that Garrett Benisch, Director of Design Development, will speak at the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Convention in Toronto on March 30, 2025 to share OurCarbon’s innovative production and use.
Benisch is presenting on the transformative potential of biochar in sustainable construction. He will join a distinguished lineup of experts in "Biochar – A Path Toward Carbon Negative Concrete," an in-depth discussion on the role of biochar in decarbonizing the built environment.
Garrett’s session, “New Value, Less Waste: Sewage Sludge Biochar into Concrete,” will focus on the pyrolysis process and the specific differentiators between process providers. It will then move into case studies of the use of Bioforcetech’s OurCarbon® biochar—a biosolids-derived material that provides a new value chain for municipal wastewater solids into the built environment.
Traditionally seen as a waste product requiring costly disposal, biosolids can be diverted, transformed into a biochar, and applied as a carbon-storing aggregate replacement in concrete. This circular solution has the potential to sequester significant amounts of carbon while reducing reliance on conventional, emissions-heavy materials like cement. For more on this topic, check out our blog post about Storing Carbon in the Built Environment.
Special attention will also be given to the necessity of both reducing direct carbon footprint of materials like concrete while also utilizing the mass of the built environment to store carbon, two different ways that buildings can decarbonize both within their sector and across others. A recent study published in Science has shown significant storage potential in buildings, with the bulk of the storage potential being replacing aggregates in concrete like OurCarbon® does.
