We are happy to share that the City of Scappoose, Oregon, has received the League of Oregon Cities (LOC) Award for Excellence for its Biosolids Upgrade Project. The award recognizes cities that demonstrate progressive and innovative approaches to public service. Scappoose was named a co-recipient alongside the cities of Falls City and Oregon City.
The Scappoose Biosolids Upgrade Project set out to address storage issues, limited land application sites, and nuisance odors. The city partnered with Consor Engineering to explore possible solutions and chose Bioforcetech’s BioDryer, a system that transforms biosolids into nutrient-rich Class A material while using 70% less energy than other systems on the market. The BioDryer utilizes bacteria to generate heat, rather than relying on external energy. Each unit can process up to 1,000 tons of dewatered solids per year, with low operational and maintenance needs.
Six months into the project, the city is meeting its goals and expects to carry out the land application process with minimal impact.
“The BioDryer shows years of hard work helping create a technology in which bacteria do the real work of drying solids instead of fossil fuels. As we continue to scale and deploy this technology, we’re excited to see our clients being acknowledged for choosing us!” - Stefano Pessina, CTO Bioforcetech
This award highlights what is possible when practical technology is used to address municipal challenges, such as waste management. It is encouraging to see communities like Scappoose adopt circular, climate-friendly solutions, and that trend is growing.
We recently announced that 12 BioDryers are being assembled simultaneously at our facility, marking our largest single production run to date. This milestone reflects the rising demand for sustainable biosolids management across the United States and Europe.
To date, 34 BioDryers are installed and operational globally, and the company passed the 50 BioDryer mark when including current dryers in design and construction. This is a huge scale and growth curve since the company’s first installation eight years ago of three BioDryers in 2017 in Redwood City.
